Faststone Image Viewer
A Free Photo Editor and Viewer That You Should Try
Faststone Image Viewer is both an image viewer and a digital photo editor. I love the format of it and it is free photo software.
As an online photo editor, it has all of the most common tools. Many photo editors display your photo on the screen as you are making your changes, but don't show your original image.
I always find that frustrating as I like to compare how my changes compare. Faststone Image Viewer shows you both images on the screen.
Here are some of the tools that you might find useful:
Red eye removal
After you edit your photo, you can then either save it as the changed image, changing your original, or do a "Save As" to save it as an additional photo, keeping your original as it was.
Faststone Image Viewer is also an excellent program to view your pictures with.
There are various settings for viewing your digital photos. I like to use Preview, with the Browser set as Thumbnails. You can make your choice under View on the top toolbar.
With my setting, I can see all the thumbnails in a folder on the right side of the screen and a larger preview of any image I select on the left side. (Once I select a photo, I just go to Edit at the top for photo editing.) However, if I double click on an image, it will open up a full screen view of the photo. And this is where it gets interesting!
As you move your mouse to the sides, top and bottom of the screen, different things appear.
Move your cursor to the top of the screen, and all of your images in the folder will appear as a filmstrip. Do you want to look at another one instead? Just click on it.
Go to the left. A list of all the possible editing tools appear, among other things. So you can edit right in this full size screen without going back to the previous thumbnail page.
Go to the bottom of the screen towards the right, and the files that you are working with which have been minimized here will appear. You can bring any of them up and work with them.
If you go to the bottom of the screen but towards the left, other tools, including editing tools show as icons will be there.
Move to the right side. Photo info will appear.
I love this software, and it is free! The only negative is that I find it a bit slow on start up, but once it is loaded, working with it is quick and easy.
