Photo Editing Programs
Recommended Free and Pay For Software

You can use various photo editing programs or photo editing software to work with your photos to enhance them. Many are free, some are reasonably priced, and others are more pricey.

Some are easy to use with simple features. Others have the simplicity, but also have more extensive features if you ever want to explore and/ or use them. There are some programs that are very good. One of them, Irfanview, I have used for years. The other, Webresizer, is one that I just recently discovered. All of the programs below are good ones, and they each have pros and cons. It's a good ideas to try them out. All of the editing software that are not free still have free trials.

By the way, if you are looking for software to create slideshows, please visit my page on free slideshow software.

Free Photo Editing Software

Click on the highlighted links to read my photo software reviews and additional information.

Irfanview
Irfanview does just about all of the every day editing you would want. From There are many free photo editing programs.adjusting color in your pictures to sharpening to re-sizing, this digital photo software has a multitude of features. If you want to keep it simple, you can. Yet, some features like re-sizing, can work in a more sophisticated way if you like.....but it's not necessary. Read about my page What Is Irfanview?

Webresizer
This is an extremely easy, simple online photo editing program. Did I say it was simple? While it shows the physical size dimensions, it will also show the file size. Many programs do not do this. Again, it is free! Please visit my page about Web Resizer to learn how this site works.

Fast Stone Image Viewer
This is a great image viewer but it also excels in editing. One of the nice things about it is when you edit your photo, for example making it brighter, it shows you the original at the same time so that you can compare. Faststone Image Viewer is excellent photo software. And free!

Paint.net
This digital photo editing software does all of the basics in a very easy way. The one thing I do not like about Paint.net, is that when you resize an image, you must Save it before you can see what the actual file size is. However, once you click Save and see the file size and the quality of your image, you can change it. By using the slider, you can make the file size smaller or larger and automatically see what the quality of the image will be.

Picasa Software
Google's Picasa photo software is more than just a photo editor. It is also a photo viewer. Sharing and storing are also great features. Please visit my other pages on Picasa for more information:
Picasa Software
- an overview of Picasa 3 and Picasa Web Albums
Picasa Photo Editing - a review of the editing features on Picasa 3 - there is now an option to edit in the photo editing program, Picnik, which I explain.
Picasa Web Album - the online photo sharing site

Picnik
This is online photo editing software which works great and is very easy to use. Picnik photo editor (review) offers all the usual edits and then some. You can easily save your changed photos to either your computer or sites such as Facebook (and lots more).

Other Photo Editing Programs (Not Free)

Adobe Photoshop Elements
The newest version is 7 and has added some nice features and tools. Photoshop Elements software is an economical alternative to Photoshop, yet offers all of the basic (and many advanced) features.

Paint Shop Pro
Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 does many of the things that Photoshop does, but it is much less expensive. You can use this program for just about everything, including resizing. The photo resizing features lets you edit both the physical and file size. For more information about this software, please visit my page on Corel Paint Shop Pro.

Photoshop
Not only do you have to pay for Photoshop software, it is not cheap at all. However, it does it all. It caters to those who are looking for digital photo editing programs that are extremely sophisticated. However, it can still do some easy editing. There are many basic Photoshop techniques.

Once you consistently work with the same program, it is easy to jump right in and get the basics done. You can get into more advanced techniques if you wish.

Do These Photo Editing Programs Work With Vista?

It depends which software and which type of Vista you have...32 or 64 bit. Currently here is the story.

If you have Vista 32 bit:

Irfanview - OK
Fast Stone Image Viewer - OK
Paint.net - OK
Picasa 3 - OK
Photoshop Elements - OK (Versions 5, 6 &7)
Paint Shop Pro Photos X2 - OK
Photoshop CS3 & CS4 - OK

If you have Vista 64 bit:

Irfanview - questionable (this means some users have had problems and others have not)
Fast Stone Image Viewer - OK
Paint.net - OK
Picasa 3 - questionable
Photoshop Elements - NO (This is for all versions, including 6 & 7)
Paint Shop Pro Photos X2 - OK
Photoshop CS3 & CS4 - OK

This is the current status for January 2009. If you would like to re-check, visit Windows Vista Compatibility Center. Click Software. Type in the name of the software and click Go. Click Learn More to determine if the photo editing program is compatible with Vista 32 and 64 bits.
